I'm Kay Canavino, and my fine art photography reflects a reverence for the natural world. Much of what I photograph is usually unseen or simply underappreciated: life beneath the surface of the water, heaps of dead plants, and the landscape after the light has gone. There are often elements of danger and mystery in the work, and darkness plays a major role. I'm drawn to the contradictions nature holds together so easily, such as light and dark, order and disorder, death and renewal.
That pull toward the natural world goes back a long way. Growing up, I spent my days roaming the woods and fields of a small farm outside Chicago, and I've loved plants ever since. A childhood spent on the move left me with a lasting love of travel, too. I picked up my first camera as a kid, but photography sat quietly in the background for years until I found my way into studio work. Those early instincts, curiosity about small things and a willingness to look closely, still shape every photograph I make.
Today my work falls into three collections. My underwater photography explores a world most people only glimpse from above, where light and form behave in unexpected ways. Exotic Debris, my latest series, turns heaps of dead plants into subjects worth a second look, finding structure and beauty in decay. My night photography leans into darkness itself, letting shadow and mystery shape each image as much as light does. Each collection stands on its own, but together they ask the same questions about what we notice and what we miss.
Across all three, the goal is the same: to slow down and notice what we usually walk past. A tangle of spent stems, a shape drifting in deep water, a quiet landscape after dark. These moments are easy to overlook, and that is exactly what makes them worth photographing. I hope each image invites you to pause for a moment and see something familiar in a new way.
